The Open-Access Fund of the Austrian Academy of Sciences supports all Open-Access publications by members of the Austrian Academy of Sciences that are not a result of third-party funded projects. Funding for Article Processing Costs (APCs) in journals and for the publication of monographs or articles in edited volumes can be applied for from the Open-Access Fund.
 

General funding conditions

  • The submitting/corresponding author is a member of the OeAW .
  • The publication is accepted by a publisher and has not yet been published, a cost estimate for the specific publication is available.
     

Funding conditions for journal articles

  • Publication in a journal listed in the DOAJ (Directory of Open-Access Journals).
  • Article published under a Creative Commons licence (CC-BY) without embargo period.
  • A reference to the funding by the OeAW appears in the publication:
    This research was funded in whole, or in part, by the Open-Access Fund of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. For the purpose of open access, the author has applied a CC BY public copyright licence to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising from this submission.
Maximum funding
  • Open-Access article up to a maximum amount of EUR 2,400 (EUR 2000 + 20% VAT to be paid in Austria).
     

Funding conditions for monographs or contributions to edited volumes

  • Proof of a peer review process appropriate to the subject.
  • The publisher is listed in the DOAB (Directory of Open-Access Books) or is a member of the OASPA (Open-Access Scholarly Publishers Association).
  • Volume is published under a Creative Commons licence (CC-BY).
  • The article, monograph or contribution must be archived on epub.oeaw.ac.at the repository of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
  • The following reference to the funding organisation must be included:
    This research was funded in whole, or in part, by the Open-Access Fund of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. For the purpose of open access, the author has applied a CC-BY public copyright licence to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising from this submission.
Maximum funding
  • Open-Access monograph up to a maximum amount of EUR 8,000 (incl. VAT).
  • Open-Access contribution in edited volumes up to a maximum amount of EUR 2,000, for several articles by one or more authors in an edited volume up to a maximum amount of EUR 8,000.
The following are expressly not funded
  • Publication costs of works or results from funded projects / third-party funded projects (e.g. FWF, FFG, ERC, ...).
  • Free purchases of articles in subscription-based journals with an Open-Access option (hybrid journals).
  • Proceedings and collective works at editor level (only authors can apply).

 

Procedure

1) At the time of application to the Open-Access Fund of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the final version of the publication project must be available and evaluable with regard to the funding criteria. Application with all necessary documents to oafonds(at)oeaw.ac.at.
2) The OeAW Library will carry out the formal review (completeness of the documents, authorisation to submit an application).
3) The expected costs or the maximum funding amount stated in the publisher's/journal's cost information will be reserved for a maximum of three months.
4) The first come first, serve principle applies. Applications will be ranked according to the date of receipt; the date of submission is the date on which all documents have been submitted in full. The publication must be submitted to the journal/publisher no later than three months after submitting the application to the Open-Access Fund at the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
5) If the article or the publication of the monograph or a contribution is accepted by the editorial office or the publisher, the invoice for the APCs or the publication fee is sent directly to the OeAW library and is paid there. The publisher's invoice can be submitted directly to the Open-Access Fund. For invoices that exceed the funding amount, only the maximum funding amount will be refunded.
6) If a journal article is rejected by the editorial board after peer review, the reservation of the requested publication costs will be cancelled after informal notification by the applicant.
7) After the funding pot has been exhausted, new applications must be rejected.
