From seven children to below replacement level

Factors behind the world's most rapid fertility decline in Iran

The fertility rate in the Islamic Republic of Iran fell from around 7.0 births per woman in the early 1980s to 2.1 births per woman in 2000. The fact that the largest and fastest fall in fertility ever recorded should have occurred in one of the world's few Islamic Republics demands explanation. This seminar addresses this issue in great detail. The main focus of the presentation is on fertility levels and trends over the last three decades as well as the explanation of the phenomenal fertility decline in an Islamic context. The concluding arguments suggest continued low fertility in Iran.

Vortrag von Mohammad Jalal Abbasi-Shavazi, Universität von Teheran.
